It's May & I Refuse to Shovel Snow

The photo above was taken from a spot where we took a similar photo
back in December of the First Snow of the Season.  Hopefully, this has
to be the last.  It is May 2nd (not a misprint) and it was snowing and
accumulating in the middle of the afternoon.  The photos here were
taken at around 2:15 p.m. CDT on May 2, 2013. As much as 4 inches of
snow could fall in parts of NE Iowa by morning.  See video below from
Protivin Ball Park while it was snowing

Former Turkey Valley Standout Named
Missouri Valley Conference
"Player of the Week"

Haley Kriener
who helped lead Turkey Valley to 2 state tournaments in softball
(2006,2008) was named the Missouri Valley Conference Player of the
Week yesterday (4/22/2013).

The
University of Northern Iowa third baseman had an impressive
performance this weekend against the Indiana State Sycamores.

Kriener was a threat at the plate throughout the weekend going six-
for-nine with seven RBI and a home run.

Kriener’s offensive attack played a key role in UNI’s success this
weekend sweeping Indiana State in a three-game series. Kriener’s
1.000 slugging percentage and .636 on-base percentage each set the
pace for the Panthers. Kriener also was credited with a stolen base.

Kriener is considered one of the top softball players in the history of
Turkey Valley and was a four year starter at third base for the
Trojans and was a first team all-state selection her junior and senior
seasons (2008 & 2009).

The UNI senior is from Fort Atkinson and the daughter of Jim and Dana
Kriener.

It's April 21st, Do You Know
Where Your Snow Shovel Is?

Many area residents woke up Sunday morning to a snow covered
ground.  Sidewalks, steps, and even roads were a little slippery in
spots.  For awhile some of the Biggest snowflakes ever were coming
down.

Hardly any work in the fields has been done as it has been either
raining or snowing almost every day during one of the worst springs in
a long long time.  If it keeps up it might become the worst spring ever.

By the way, officially spring is now over a month old.
2013 Wrestling
Hall of Fame

What many believed was a record crowd
of nearly 200 gathered at the Cresco
Country Club in Cresco on Monday
evening (4/8/2013) to welcome the 4
newest members to the prestigious Iowa
Wrestling Hall of Fame, which is located in
Cresco.

Pre-Planting Sunset
"Iowa is known for  its beautiful sunsets"

The snow is mainly gone in the fields.  With a little more drying the
planting season will begin.  A year ago at this time farmers were way
ahead of schedule.  This year has been more typical of years gone by.
Spring is Here??????

Only on the Calendar!
Recent snows and cold weather with high winds makes it seem more
like the middle of January than the first day of Spring.  Photo Above of
the Protivin Ball Park taken on March 20 shows some of the drifts, but
it is hard to pick up the cold weather which had the temp near 0 on the
morning of the first day of Spring and wind chills below 10 below.
March has been a Lion throughout (actually colder most days than it
was in January and much more snow).  Normal temperature for First
Day of Spring around here is 48.  We are not expected to hit 40 until
right at the end of March.  Long term weather has us into the 60s in
the early part of April (or is that an APRIL FOOLS JOKE?).

Good Friday Flood!

Photo above Near the Farmer's Mill
in Protivin.

Temperatures around 50 on Good Friday resulted in a lot of the area
snows to finally melt.  2 of the 4 main arteries through Protivin were
closed because of water over the road.  Though out of its banks, area
residents told us this isn't near as bad as it has been in past springs
or even from heavy rains in the summer.
