    (Cresco)  Ashley Kovarik raced
    the eight with the game winning
    run to give the Crestwood
    Cadet's softball team a 5-4 win
    in its conference opener against
    Decorah Tuesday evening in
    Cresco.

    Earlier Kovarik powered a 2-run
    home run (photo sequence to
    the left shows Kovarik hitting the
    ball, rounding the bases and
    being greeted by her
    teammates).

    Rachel Burris homered for
    Decorah in the fifth which gave
    the Vikings a 3-2 lead.

    A Lexi Shelton double in the
    sixth extended the lead to 4-2
    bringing home Hannah Kuehner
    who was running for pitcher
    Savannah Klimesh who had
    singled

    Crestwood tied the game in the
    sixth when with 2-out Emily
    Novotny singled followed by a
    Meghan McAllister double and a
    Jessy Stika double.

    Tara Moellers followed with a
    single and Stika raced for home
    where the throw came wide up
    the first base line.

    Stika dove head first for the
    plate and Burras, the catcher
    dove to tag Stika.
    Stika was called out on a close
    play at the plate.

    In the bottom of the eight, Jamie
    Henry lead off the inning for
    Crestwood by reaching on an
    error.

    Kovark followed with a single to
    right, where the ball was
    bobbled allowing Henry to move
    up to third and Kovarik to
    second.

    Emily Novotny hit a ball up the
    middle played by Moran Lonning
    who rifled home to nail Henry.

    Meghan McAllister followed with
    a high hopper which allowed
    Kovarik to score the game
    winner.

    McAllister was the winning
    pitcher coming on on the
    seventh and throwing to shutout
    innings.  Grace Gast started the
    game.

    Decorah banged out 9 hits in
    the game, including two by Kelsy
    Strand who is now 9-18 for a .
    500 batting average on the
    season.

    The second game of the double-
    header was suspended in the
    third by lightning with the score
    tied 1-1
