Turkey Valley Football-2010 @ Bellevue

Game Write-up by Randy Novotny-Game Played 10/1/2010
(Bellevue) The Turkey Valley Trojans coming off a Big Homecoming
victory took the nearly 3 hour bus ride to Bellevue on Friday trying to
avoid a stumble in their contest with the upset minded Comets.
The evening started pretty nice weather wise, but by the end of the first
halve we did get some raindrops, though very few, and the wind did pick-
up and right at the end of the game there was some very light rain. The
long trip home was a bit different with almost constant rain up through
and just beyond the Dubuque area.
It was Homecoming at Bellevue and early on it looked like the Comets
were going to perform some homecoming magic, but it turned out to only
be a teaser for the home faithful.
The Comets did score first after a punt hit a Turkey Valley blocker in the
back deep in Trojan territory and was recovered by Bellevue at the 7.
After Issac Toberman threw a Comet runner for a 2-yard loss, Jake
Wagner galloped 9 yards for the first score of the night with 6:32
remaining in the first quarter.
Brian Schmitt blocked the PAT and the Comets had to settle for a 6-0
lead.
The Trojans also muffed the kick-off and had a nice run by Jordan
Schmitt nullified by an illegal motion early in the next drive, but after that
for the most part the mistakes were behind Turkey Valley.
Jordan Mitchell went off to the races and darted by everyone and turned
on the jets on a 76-yard run to the house and after Jordan Schmitt
found Justin Bakula in the corner of the end zone on the 2-point
conversion, the Turkey Valley defense had all the points it needed for its
6th win of the season without a blemish.
It was Turkey Valley 8 Bellevue 6 with 4:31 left to play in the first period.
It really was all Trojans the rest of the way. The defense kept the
Comets in a nice rhythm of 1-2-3 Punt for most of the rest of the game.
As a matter of fact the only offensive play of any consequence (other
than the TD run) mustered by Bellevue all night was on the very first
play from scrimmage when a razzle dazzle pass play that looked like an
end around from the 19 was good for 37 yards to the Turkey Valley 46.
It was the only time all night the Bellevue offense was able to move the
ball into Trojan territory.
So, it was Turkey Valley defensive dominance that really was the tone of
the day, led by many but highlighted by key tackles in the interior by
Issac Toberman, constant pressure on the quarterback preventing The
Comets from establishing their passing attack (Marshall Rosenbaum
seemed to be in the QBs face all night), Brian Schmitt with the blocked
kick and a fumble recovery, and an interception by Justin Bakula
(although he fumbled on the same play).
Luke Shatek had an interception for the second game in a row and this
one set-up a touchdown just before the halve.
Bakula also shined on offense. It was his touchdown reception on a 12-
yard pass play with Brady Kuennen with :52 left in the first quarter that
made you feel that an upset probably wasn't in the cards this night. It
gave TV a 14-6 lead.
Scoring wise it was a 1-2 tandem of Mitchell and Bakula; Mitchell scored
3 TDs and (2) 2-point conversion for 22 points on the night and Bakula's
total looked like something that will be expected of him on the hardwood,
but not often on the gridiron, with 14 points with a pair of TDs and the
conversion. Jordan Schmitt scored a TD and a conversion for the other
8 points.
Mitchell's other 2 TDs came on a 5-yard run with 9:19 to play in the
second quarter and a 3-yard run with 10:37 to play in the third quarter.
It was the latter that gave the Trojans the 44-6 lead and started the non-
stop clock the rest of the way.
Bakula's other TD was a thing of beauty with 4:20 to play in the first half
on a 30-yard pass from Jordan Schmitt. Schmitt's score came just
before intermission on an 8-yard run.
Wapsie Valley lost 17-6 to Maquoketa Valley and Starmont won putting
the Trojans and Starmont tied for first place in the district @ 4-0 leading
up to their match-up at Starmont Friday night.

Its amazing how the schedule has worked in the young Trojans favor.
With the toughest games ahead, they have had time to develop, making
for a very interesting end of season. A win at Bellvue almost assures
another playoff appearence, but with Wapsie Valley, Clayton Ridge and
Starmont all coming up there's still a lot of work for TV to do to secure
another district title.
