| Turkey Valley 40 Maquoketa Valley 0 The Turkey Valley Trojans used a balance attack in rolling to a 40-0 District win over Maquoketa Valley in front of the home crowd on cold September night to run its district record to 2-0. Maquoketa Valley came into the game 3-0 and looked tough in the early going until Dennis Wenthold intercepted a pass deep in Maquoketa Valley territory mid-way through the first quarter. From that point forward it was all Turkey Valley as Coach Mark Scott employed the tandem of Brian Schmitt and Jordan Mitchell out of the backfield with occasional counters from AJ Martin and Ben Novotny and just the right mixture of passes from QB Jordan Schmitt to keep the Maquoketa Valley defense off balance all night. Turkey Valley rushed for 328 yards led by Brian Schmitt 105 yards on 18 carries and Jordan Mitchell 93 on just 9 carries. Jordan Schmitt with 51 yards and AJ Martin with 43 also contributed mightily to the ground attack. For the most part the Trojan defense yielded practically nothing all night and as ususal the Trojans were solid on the special teams. Jordan Schmitt completed 2 passes; 1 to Marshall Rosenbaum for 48 yards and a TD and the other to Ben Novotny for 40 yards. Josh Hansmeier led the defense with 7 tackles and Nic Schaufenbuel with 5, while Adam Kriener, Brian Kuhn, and Dave Balik all had 4. Offensively-We ran the ball very
effectively. Again our largest obstacle
was our own penalties on offense. We
will need to eliminate those mental
mistakes to play at the level we need
to play at. Jordan Mitchell, AJ Martin,
Jordan Schmitt and Brian Schmitt ran
the ball well behind the good blocking
of our front seven.
Defensively- The defense played
very well. Marshall Rosenbuam had a
blocked pass that was then intercepted
by Dennis Wenthold. Marshal also had
a sack along with John Schmitt, Nick
Shaufenbuel and Josh Hansmeier.
Jordan Mitchell intercepted a pass on
fourth down to stop the lone scoring
threat of Maq Valley. The defensive
line pressured the quarterback all
night and the db’s only allowed one
pass to be thrown down field. Three of
their four completions were screen
type throws.
Special Teams- Jordan Mitchell had
two punt returns for 19 yrds. One of
their punts was blocked by Jordan
Schmitt. AJ Martin improved his
punting doing a nice job of punting the
ball away from the receiver. Nic
Shuafenbuel kicked off and had a
good day of kicking.
Comments- We played very well.
Maquoketa Valley was undefeated
prior to this. We have several tough
teams left to play so we will need to
continue to improve each week.
Next week we travel to North Linn to
play a much improved team from last
year.
