West Branch 27  Turkey Valley 20

West Branch scored 20 unanswered points against the
Turkey Valley Trojans and came away with a 27-20 victory in
the second round of the playoffs in a game played at
Turkey Valley.

The Trojans dominated early play and built a 20-7 lead early
in the second quarter, but West Branch scored before the
end of the first half and at intermission it was 20-14 in favor
of Turkey Valley.

The Bears tied the score late in the third quarter, but
missed the opportunity to take the lead when they muffed
the PAT attempt.

The Trojans were unable to put together a sustained drive
in the second half.

With the score tied 20-20 with about 8 minutes left to play,
the Trojans were faced with a 4th and 2 at about the 45 yard
line of West Branch and elected to punt the football away.
The punt just barely made it into the end zone and was
brought out to the 20 where West Branch put together a
nearly 6 minute drive and scored what proved to be the
game winning touchdown with 2:14 left to play.  West
Branch went primarily on runs up the middle and controlled
the line of scrimmage in putting together the game winning
drive.

With all its time outs left the Trojans started inside their
own 20 with just a little over 2 minutes to work with.

Turkey Valley who relied almost exclusively on the run
during its successful campaign was forced to go to the
passing game.

They moved the ball through the air about as well as they
have all season, but as they got inside the 40 of West
Branch the clock was ticking down and twice on a series
they were forced to kill the clock with incomplete passes.
Faced with a 4th and 3, The Trojans had a pass play go
incomplete.

Turkey Valley ends its season at 8-3, while West Branch
now faces Alburnett a 13-10 winner over Wapsie Valley in
the quarterfinals of the playoffs.

We will have several pictures, video highlights and will talk
with a couple of players and coaches about the great
season  enjuoyed by the Turkey Valley Trojans

Coach Scott Comments

Offensively- We ran the ball
effectively with 309 yards for the game.
Brian Schmitt did a good job of picking
up tough fullback yardage. Jordan
Mitchell ran the hard all night
Jordan Schmitt and Ben Novotny had
nice runs on crucial downs to keep
scoring drives alive. The offensive line
did a good job of blocking again.

Defensively- The front defensive line
played very well. Luke Kuennen, Josh
Hansmeier, Brian Schmitt, Marshall
Rosenbaum and Dalton Hackman all
played well. The Defensive back field
of Dave Balik, Jordan Mitchell, Jordan
Schmitt and Ben Novotny did a great
job of tackling and playing pass
defense. The whole defensive unit did
a great job of gang tackling. Jordan
Schmitt had an interception. Brian
Schmitt and Nic Schaufenbuel each
had a fumble recovery.

Special Teams- AJ Martin did a great
job of punting the ball for zero returns.
Nic Schaufenbuel kicked the ball to
allow our kick team to cover the return.
Our kick return team had good returns.

Comments- We played very well.
However offensive penalties helped to
stall crucial drives in the second half.
The game was not out of reach until
the last play fell short with 25 seconds
left in the game. If you weren’t there
you missed a great high school football
game.

" The players had a great year.
The effort on the field was always
there and I hope these young men
will have great memories of this
season."
