South Winn 31 Turkey Valley 24

It was a thriller in Calmar.  South Winneshiek led early 12-0,
but Turkey Valley took the lead with the opening kick-off of
the second half when Ben Novotny scored his third TD of
the game on a 65 yard return.

The Warriors came back to tie the score at 18, but TV came
right back and captured the lead on a 1-yard Jordan
Schmitt dive for the touchdown to make it 24-18.  Turkey
Valley was oh for 4 on its conversion attempts.

South Winn scored with 7:13 left in the game on a 7 yard
run by Colton Hageman to tie the score at 24-24. The PAT
kick knuckled through the uprights to give the Warriors
the lead for good.  It was the first successful conversion by
either team all night

It really was a case of too much Colton Hageman who
scored 4 touchdowns for the Warriors.  Hageman rushed
for 153 yards on 32 carries

Another key to the win for South Winneshiek was limiting
Turkey Valley's all-state back Jordan Mitchell to just 26
yards on 13 carries, as they keyed on him all night.

Comments from
Coach Mark Scott

Offensively-
"We moved the ball
sporadically. Ben Novotny had some
nice plays in the first quarter. Our
passing and receiving efficiency needs
to improve. We need to get better at
sustaining blocks. This was the first
varsity game for several of our players
so I expect us to improve each week
on offense."
Defensively- "Defensively we gave up
big plays on crucial downs. Brian
Schmitt and Luke Kuennen did a very
good job on the D-line."
Special Teams- "Our return teams
were close to breaking a big play a
couple of times. Ben Novotny did break
a big play. He returned the third
quarter opening kick for a TD."
Comments-
"This was a tough loss to a good
football team. The players played
hard. We play home against Valley of
Elgin next Friday. It should be a great
game for people to come watch. "
