Turkey Valley 20  Wapsie Valley 17 (OT)

Jordan Mitchell on 2nd and goal from the four ran straight ahead
behind the Turkey Valley Trojan line for the game winning
touchdown in overtime for the 20-17 victory over Wapsie Valley
and in the process handed the Warriors their first loss of the
season and put the district race in a three way tie with one week
to play in the regular season.

Turkey Valley opened up a 14-0 lead in the third period on a long
touchdown run by quarterback Jordan Schmitt and looked to be
coasting to victory when Wapsie Valley struck on a long pass play
midway through the fourth quarter to get back into the game.

Wapsie scored the game tying touchdown on a run with about
2:20 left to play in regulation.

Turkey Valley won the overtime toss and elected to go on defense
first and forced Wapsie into a fourth and long.   The Warriors
elected to go for the field goal and took the lead for the first time
in the game 17-14.

The Trojans would get their shot in the overtime and were able to
score the winning touchdown on just 2 plays; both runs by
Mitchell.  In Iowa high school football both teams start from the 10
in the overtime period.

The win left Turkey Valley, Wapsie Valley and Starmont  all at 5-1
in district play with 1 week left in the regular season..  TV holds
the tie-breaker against the other 2 teams because they beat both
of them, so a Turkey Valley victory over Clayton Ridge will make
the Trojans the District Champions

Second Half highlights with the Jordan Schmitt long TD run
and the 2-point conversion pass to Dave Balik.  Interviews
with Carson Bruess and Jordan Schmitt.  More strong
defensive plays.
See Video highlights of the first half including the TD run
by Jordan Mitchell and numerous defensive plays by Josh
Hansmeier, Marshal Rosenbaum, Luke Kuennen and others
along with excellent blocking from Brian Kuhn and the rest
of the offensive line.  Plus interviews from Coach Scott and
Marshall Rosenbaum
Comments from
Coach Mark Scott

Offensively-
We ran the ball
effectively with 229 yards for the game.
Brian Schmitt did a good job of picking
up tough fullback yardage. Jordan
Mitchell ran the hard all night
Jordan Schmitt and Ben Novotny had
nice runs on crucial downs to keep
scoring drives alive. The offensive line
did a good job of blocking again. We
struggled for good field position most
of the game.

Defensively- The front defensive line
played very well. Luke Kuennen, Josh
Hansmeier, Brian Schmitt, Marshall
Rosenbaum and Dalton Hackman
caused Wapsie Valley’s offense
problems the entire game. The whole
defensive unit did a great job of gang
tackling.The defense had several
fourth down stops.

Special Teams- AJ Martin did a nice
job of punting the ball to limit the
returns for Wapsie’s dangerous
returners. Nic Schaufenbuel kicked the
ball to allow our kick team to cover the
return.

Comments- We played very well. Next
week we play Clayton Ridge at home
for a chance to win the district
championship.
